How the Offsite Ads fee works
Etsy advertises listings on other sites. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and buys from your shop within 30 days, the order is “attributed” and Etsy charges 15% of the order total, or 12% if your shop has ever reached $10,000 in sales in a 365-day period. The fee is capped at $100 USD per order. The order total includes the item price and the shipping and gift wrap you charge; for US sellers it excludes sales tax. What “break-even” means here
Some ad-attributed orders are buyers who would have found you anyway. On those, the ad fee is pure cost. On orders the ad truly created, you earn the ad-order profit you would not have had. If a share f of attributed orders are genuinely new, Offsite Ads pay off when f × ad-order profit ≥ (1 − f) × ad fee, which simplifies to f ≥ ad fee ÷ normal profit. Nobody can see that share exactly, but it tells you how much the ads have to do to be worth it.
Worked example
Using the defaults, a $30 item with $6 shipping makes $17.56 profit on a normal order. From a 15% Offsite Ad the fee is $5.40 (15% × $36), so profit falls to $12.16. Break-even share: $5.40 ÷ $17.56 = about 31%. If fewer than roughly a third of your ad orders are buyers you would not otherwise have reached, the ads cost you money on this item. Can you opt out?
Only if your shop has never made $10,000 USD in any 365-day period. Once you reach that level, participation is required for the life of the shop, at the lower 12% rate. Source: Etsy Help: How Etsy’s Offsite Ads Work.

Common questions
How much is the Etsy Offsite Ads fee?
15% of the attributed order total for shops that have always been under $10,000 USD in sales in any 365-day period, or 12% once a shop reaches that level. The fee on one order is capped at $100 USD.
Does the Offsite Ads fee include shipping?
Yes. It is charged on the order total including the shipping and gift wrap you charge. For US sellers, sales tax is not included.
Are Etsy Offsite Ads worth it?
It depends on how many ad orders are truly new sales. This calculator shows the break-even share for your product: if at least that share of attributed orders would not have happened without the ad, the ads pay for themselves.
Do I still pay the normal Etsy fees on an Offsite Ads order?
Yes. The listing, transaction and payment processing fees still apply; the Offsite Ads fee is added on top.
